Jom Berbahasa Isyarat

An Inspire Initiative Project

For many of us, we speak as a means of conveying our ideas, thoughts, and emotions. What if we could share those thoughts, stories, and dreams in another way, to surpass the barrier that is our voice?

Join us on the 24th of August to learn how the deaf community utilizes sign language in their everyday lives.

JOM BERBAHASA ISYARAT

By Foo Hui Yi (2019)

Project Objective

With the aim to promote social inclusion in the Malaysian community, our Inspire Initiative project put together a forum and sign language workshop at Monash University Malaysia. The event itself was designed to increase awareness on deaf culture and sign language among university students, at the same time, spark interests to learn Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (Malaysian Sign Language).

"Sign language is a visual language that is fun and easy to learn. We hope that this event could help you know a bit more about the Deaf community in Malaysia; you will be able to learn some basic Malaysian Sign Language (Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia) too!"

WHAT OUR PARTICIPANTS THINK?

PARTICIPANT A

“It basically sums up the introduction to the deaf community which made me realise how lucky I am with what I have.”

PARTICIPANT B

“Connecting with someone who had a lot to share about her REAL life experience [as a part of the deaf community], and not just someone who is telling secondhand stories, helped me learn things from a completely different point of view.”

PARTICIPANT C

”I've always wanted to learn sign language but CM provides the opportunity to learn about them better so this has given me a better insights.”
