Wildlife Conservation Project

Charisma Movement’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness and appreciation began in 2016. In 2020, our flagship environmental project was rebranded to the Wildlife Conservation Project (previously Project Penyu), as we expanded our wildlife and environment of interest to include terrapins, mangroves and fireflies as our wildlife and environment of interest, while continuing exposure to turtle conservation efforts.

As part of the Wildlife Conservation Project 2021, Charisma Movement plans to encourage a citizen scientist campaign  on two chosen fields, the coral reef ecosystem and the nesting and foraging sea turtle. We would also contribute to the conservation of marine wildlife and highlight the connection between sustainable tourism and its effect on Malaysia's wildlife, especially in the marine environment. This year, we will be focusing not just on enhancing the volunteering experience, but also on the social and cultural effect on environmental issues.

To instil a sense of stewardship towards the environment amongst Malaysian youths, through hands-on conservation work and mini-projects.

To affirm the importance of sustainable tourism and its direct impact on wildlife and the environment.

To engage with the local community via acts of community service (i.e. beach clean-ups, adoption family).

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

To raise awareness on wildlife conservation efforts to the public by conducting post-event social media campaigns and school engagement programmes.

To embed the experience of the citizen scientist into this programme to influence youths with a non-environmental background.

To respond to the importance of waste management and the water footprint in Malaysia.

Wildlife Conservation Project (WCP) 2021 is a volunteer-fundraising      programme that requires volunteers to fundraise a selected amount goal prior to the pilot trip in August 2021.

Volunteers will be given a 2-month period to fundraise the amount with Charisma Movement’s guidance. 100% of the money fundraise will be used for the conservation project.

Additionally, WCP 2021 is open to all youths from any background or field of study as CM will provide all necessary training in the virtual pre-departure event, Know-Before-You-Go (KBYG). All of the volunteers are expected to attend to learn the skills and knowledge needed before going on the physical pilot trip.

*The timeline above are tentative and subject to change.

CHOOSE YOUR TEAM!

Volunteers are free to choose their own field of interest. WCP2021 comprises of two teams that offer a variety of activities in promoting the citizen scientist programme.

TURTLE TEAM

The Turtle Team will aid the

sea turtle conservation efforts of the Perhentian Turtle Project in the Perhentian Island. The volunteers will be assisting the NGO in monitoring the population of sea turtles by gathering biometric data by using a photo-identification technique.

CORAL TEAM

The Coral Team will work hand-in-hand with the Perhentian Marine Research Station and Alunan Coral Project to restore and conserve the coral reefs of Perhentian Island. The volunteers will also assist in a coral watch programme with the local kids in the Kg. Nelayan community with help of the Perhentian Eco Education Project.

Charisma Movement will take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We will:

1.  Ensure that all volunteers are tested for the COVID-19 test and obtain a negative result prior to the pilot project.

2.  Undertake all safety measures and standard operating procedures throughout the programme.

3.  Ensure that none of the volunteers are allowed onto the project if they present with any of the early common symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, dry cough, and fatigue as well as other less common symptoms such as loss of taste or smell, aches and pains, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, red eyes, diarrhoea, or a skin rash. If these symptoms occur, volunteers will be advised to attend a medical check-up and get a doctor’s advice.
